College can be an expensive venture. Getting the education to succeed in the career that you want is an important step in life but it doesn’t have to put you into debt, either. If you’ve got muscular dystrophy, there are various scholarships that you can apply for so that college tuition doesn’t have to be a financial burden. Without scholarships, you may find that you’re paying well over $10,000 a year and that doesn’t even cover books or room and board.
Incight is a firm based in Portland that offers a $750 award to students per academic year. It doesn’t matter what the field of study is. The scholarship is due in part by the co-founder of the firm having muscular dystrophy himself. He feels that it’s important to attend college regardless of disability and wants to help others do the same.
Another scholarship is offered by the Deshae Lott Ministries. The current scholarship amount is for $500 though they are looking to expand the amount in the coming years. This award will go towards students seeking a degree past a bachelor’s in any field of study.
If muscular dystrophy has left you in a wheelchair, you will be eligible for the 1-800Wheelchair scholarship. This scholarship is for $500 and they give out two per year. You will need to have a GPA of 3.0 or higher and write a 500-word essay.
If you don’t have muscular dystrophy but one of your parents do, you may be able to qualify for one of ten scholarships by the NCPDF. The National Center for Parents with Disabilities & Their Families is offering $1000 to college students and high school seniors. You’ll need to meet the deadline and you can apply easily.
Look at the MDA website to see if they have any other opportunities for scholarships. Associations and Foundations are adding new scholarships all the time and it’s important to try and apply for whatever you can. High school career counselors and college financial aid officers will also be able to point you in the direction of scholarships that are for muscular dystrophy as well as merit and financial need scholarships from an array of companies.
When college tuition is so expensive, applying for scholarships can be a significant help. Most scholarship application forms only take a few minutes to complete and a postage stamp to mail, so there’s no harm in filling out as many as you can get your hands on. Each one that you win will mean less student loans that you have to take out for your tuition, books and room and board. Going to college shouldn’t depend on whether you can afford it or not – after all, it’s your financial future that’s on the line.
